Happy Valentine’s Day! Today is my day to host Alison Tyler’s The Delicious Torment, the second in her memoir-esque series. This book is narrated from the perspective of young Samantha, a submissive woman who finds herself with a dominant, older lawyer named Jack in the first book, Dark Secret Love. This sequel is the story of their relationship, from Sam’s perspective.
One afternoon I sat reading this book in a cafe. Shortly into my reading, I noticed the urgency with which I squirmed. This story felt so real. Perhaps it is unsurprising that this book has such a realistic feel to it, namely because it is loosely based on Tyler’s real life. However I definitely think I was surprised at the ways in which it resonated with me specifically. It wasn’t the BDSM–because I have barely begun experimenting with that–it was the relationship! As I was processing my reactions to this story I realized that Tyler’s depiction of the relationship resonated so damn well with me and my ex. As a reader, I had access to Sam’s inner dialogue, a dialogue which I’ve had before and will again. Questions left unanswered. Desires that needed to be voiced or shared somehow. I thought the inner turmoil (dare I say it–torment) was a delightful way to tell the story. I was kept at Sam’s side, every time she was scared, aroused, tormented, satiated; indeed I felt as she felt at times, because of how well Tyler wrote this tale.
This is a book that encapsulates well the thoughts that can run through a woman’s mind when it comes to sex and relationships. I often think a lot of things during sex play, and every time I giggle the other person inquires into it. I’m just talking to myself in my head, especially during sex. The way the inner dialogue is written here does this experience justice. Hooray women’s sexualities!
Like I’ve said before with Alison Tyler’s first book in this series, I loved how this book spoke so well to how real relationships operate. My most visceral response to this book was my response to the first as well. I think that this is a great story for those curious about kinky lifestyles to read, but this is also a great read for people who prefer various relationship styles. And besides, this book is fucking hot!
Thank you so much to Alison Tyler and Cleis Press for providing me with a copy of The Delicious Torment in exchange for my honest review. xoxo
